HSM4A WI Coalition

The HSM4A WI Coalition is made up of individuals, organizations, community groups, schools and school districts, and others committed to making this a reality in Wisconsin.

The Coalition advocates for free, nutritious school meals for all K–12 Wisconsin students and works to inspire, empower, and support school meal champions to take action in support of no-cost school meals.

Maggie Smith - Holmen School District School Board Member

“We don't see hunger on a student, but we know it's out there. We know it's a pervasive problem and I think that we have the ability to find solutions to it.”

Jordan Anderson - Central Wisconsin Community Member

“It's about feeding our children and making sure they have a bright future.”

Anita Garett - Parent, Grandparent, and Food Leaders Lab Ambassador

“My mother was a single mother with five kids and there was many times I went to bed hungry. I didn't get the proper education that I needed because I was so busy, worried about getting fed. I don't want the kids to go through what I went through.”

Caitlin Harrison - Elmbrook School District Food Nutrition Director

“We want to invest in our kids and I don't know how else you can properly and more efficiently invest in the state than in our children.”

HSM4A WI Leadership Team

Founded in 2021 with the initial introduction of Assembly Bill 805 by former State Representative Kristina (Shelton) Sandherr, the HSM4A WI Coalition adopted a three-organization leadership model in 2023 to expand the movement. The School Nutrition Association of Wisconsin (SNA-WI), Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin (FAEW), and REAP Food Group work together to support, guide, and amplify the HSM4A WI Coalition.

Marty Lee, Waushara County Food Pantry:

“Our children learn best when hunger is not part of the curriculum.”

Alexis Bylander, Food Research & Action Center:

“Serving school meals to all students at no cost would be a gamechanger for students, families, and schools, supporting students’ education and health & improving nutrition.”

Michael Gasper, School District of Holmen:

“We provide other essential items for student learning like books, lockers, and desks, but we need to ensure one of the most important and basic needs a student has to learn, nutrition, is also provided for all students!”
